creating patterns with mud that tell stories
of MALI’s rich cultural heritage
AAAA
AAAA
Atelier Autodidacts Anti-Algorithms (AAAA) is a cooperative of artisans from Mali dedicated to preserving the art of Bogolan, an original Malian textile tradition. The AAAA logo, a simple line of four A’s, reflects their desire to remain beginners, continually learning and evolving.
Bogolan, also known as Bògòlanfini, connects the artisans to their land and heritage while offering unlimited creative possibilities. This traditional handmade Malian cotton fabric is dyed with fermented mud, and its creation is a labor-intensive collaboration between people and place. Every stage, from picking the cotton to spinning, weaving, dyeing, and painting, is done by hand in harmony with nature. Locally grown herbs are used for dyeing, and mud from the Niger River is used for painting intricate patterns. These native plants are believed to have medicinal properties, and the cloth is considered a 'medicine cloth' with the power to absorb harmful forces in life-threatening situations.
THE PROCESS
The artisans use their ancestral knowledge to create patterns with protective and beneficial properties, adding a contemporary twist to this ancient art form. Each AAAA Bogolan piece is unique, and any imperfections in the weaving or designs add to its charm. The cooperative values the art of slow creation, where products speak the language of the soul and celebrate their imperfections as a testament to their handmade nature.
