a series of time-rich melodic processes and variations
Marigold
Marigold
Marigold is a co-operative specialising in loomed beadwork, based in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Established in 1992, Marigold produced items such as headbands, chokers, purses and belts for local and overseas markets. Most recently they have been noticed by Alisa LaGamma at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, who arranged for a book on their work to be launched.
The color of the warp thread and the two-ply beading thread significantly impact the final appearance of each necklace. White beads look different when loomed onto red, black, or purple, and when the beads are transparent, the weft threads add another layer of color. These possibilities lead the beaders to make deliberate choices, turning each necklace into a unique endeavor. Despite the repetitive nature of the process, it remains highly improvisational, with each design inspiring the next and encouraging new variations. The creation is a time-intensive, dynamic practice that stays vibrant and never mechanical.
THE PROCESS
Marigold necklaces are made in a range of lengths and widths, each taking anything from a full day to a full week to complete. The extra-length variety gives options for wearing them wrapped twice around the neck. A single ‘standard’ necklace contains between 4800 and 5000 beads, about 600 lines of improvisation.
