Epoca Ceramic
Sonia Pueche and Jaime Mato are the ceramic artisans behind época, based in Muniellos, Asturias, Spain. Their practice encompasses vessels, tableware, sculpture and lighting, each created through an entirely manual process. Clay offers them a shared means of expression, with forms and finishes evolving freely across their work. Their approach welcomes variety and discovery, allowing each object to develop its own character. From the familiarity of a teapot to the presence of a sculptural lamp, their pieces bring an attention to material and the intimacy of handwork into everyday life.
THE PROCESS
Sonia and Jaime’s process is guided by curiosity and a willingness to let their practice change. Working entirely by hand, they approach each piece as an opportunity to explore a different form, surface or material relationship. Their work develops without a fixed formula, leaving room for ideas to shift through making and for unexpected results to inform what comes next.
Experimentation with glazes is an important part of this exploration. For Itzala, a vase made from black stoneware, they combine glazes of their own creation to produce an exterior with iridescent details. A transparent glaze lines the interior, allowing the vessel to hold water, while its outer surface offers a different tactile and visual character. These choices bring practical use into close relationship with the expressive possibilities of clay and glaze.
Firing remains a stage of discovery. Sonia and Jaime welcome the surprises of the kiln, treating each attempt as a chance to learn and develop their artistic language. Their wider practice has also incorporated wood gathered from the forest surrounding an earlier workshop, extending their exploration beyond clay alone. Across vessels, sculptures and functional objects, they respect the time that handmade ceramics require. The resulting diversity reflects an ongoing exchange between their intentions, the behaviour of materials and the discoveries that arise through working together.
