Mass Lee

Mass Lee is the shared practice of Finnish designer Josefine Mass and South Korean designer Dabin Lee, who met while studying at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Working across jewellery and art objects, they bring together their cultural backgrounds through a shared interest in sculpture, nature and storytelling. Their pieces draw on botanical forms, painting and personal memories, translating these references into objects with an intimate relationship to the body. Based in Antwerp, the duo approaches jewellery as a form of artistic expression, giving sculptural ideas a place within everyday life.

THE PROCESS

Josefine and Dabin’s approach developed from the large sculptural works they made during their studies. This interest in volume and artistic expression continues to inform their jewellery, where ideas drawn from nature, art history and their respective cultures take shape on a smaller, wearable scale. They work without a fixed style or technique, allowing each collection’s subject to guide its forms, materials and details.

Much of this exploration happens through making in their Antwerp atelier. Keeping production in-house allows the designers to experiment, adjust and refine pieces as they develop. In Dear Eden, flowers and botanical fragments become intricate metal forms: the Dent de Lion brooch captures a dandelion through a herbarium technique, with a matte finish emphasising its delicate texture. In Be My Muse, the gestures of painting become three-dimensional jewellery. Sculptural brushstrokes combine with pearls, gemstones and touches of enamel, bringing the movement and colour of a painted surface into objects worn against the body.

The designers use recycled metals sourced locally in Antwerp and collaborate with specialist craftspeople from the city’s diamond district. Bespoke commissions extend their process through conversation, sketches and the selection of metals and stones. Across these different approaches, technical decisions remain closely connected to the story of each piece, from the botanical detail of a flower to the personal significance of a commissioned object.
