Joerg Koziol
Joerg Koziol is a German artist and sculptor from Hamburg, based in southwestern France. His practice developed through drawing, painting and abstract constructions before he turned his focus to wood sculpture in 2019. Working primarily with local timber found in his surroundings, he explores the relationship between intuitive expression and considered form. Organic shapes meet geometric structures, creating tensions between movement, weight and balance. His work grows from a curiosity about materials and their possibilities, bringing the physical experience of making into objects that move between sculpture and functional design.
THE PROCESS
Joerg’s process develops through direct engagement with wood. Working with material found in his surroundings, he approaches sculpture as a gradual discovery, bringing technical knowledge into conversation with intuition. The direction of a piece emerges through making, as decisions about shape, proportion and construction respond to the material in front of him. His experience across different arts and crafts informs this approach, allowing techniques and ideas to move between disciplines.
A search for balance runs through the work. Organic forms are brought into relation with more measured, geometric elements, allowing their differences to give a composition movement and tension. In Seiltänzer, separate elements of cherry and oak form a modular sculpture that can be rearranged according to both aesthetic and functional needs. The relationship between its parts remains open, extending the exploration of form beyond the moment of making.
This interest in adaptable structures also informs collaborative projects. For À table, developed with ceramic artist Johanna Meyer, Joerg created a movable table installation from wood offcuts found at Château d’Orion. Different modules came together to support a shared gathering, connecting material reuse with the social possibilities of an object. Across these works, his process brings together the character of found wood, the precision of construction and the freedom to discover new relationships through shaping and arranging.
